Why South Korea for Higher Education?

South Korea has emerged as one of the most exciting study destinations in Asia, combining globally ranked universities, cutting-edge research facilities, and direct access to some of the world’s leading technology and manufacturing companies –  including Samsung, LG, and Hyundai. The Korean government has set an ambitious target of attracting 300,000 international students by 2027 through its ‘Study Korea 300K’ initiative, which means funding opportunities for international students are expanding rather than shrinking.

For Bangladeshi students, South Korea offers a genuinely compelling combination: living costs that are generally lower than in Western destinations, an exceptionally strong scholarship ecosystem led by the government’s flagship Global Korea Scholarship, and a growing number of English-taught degree programmes at top-ranked institutions. Rico International helps Bangladeshi students navigate the full landscape of Korean scholarships – from government-funded awards to university-specific full rides – and build genuinely competitive applications.

Why Apply for Scholarships in South Korea?

One of the Most Generous Scholarship Systems in Asia

South Korea’s flagship Global Korea Scholarship offers among the most comprehensive funding packages available to international students anywhere in the world — covering tuition, airfare, living costs, and Korean language training. Beyond GKS, several of Korea’s top universities provide automatic full-tuition scholarships to every admitted international student, particularly in STEM fields.

World-Ranked Universities and Research Excellence

Institutions such as Seoul National University, KAIST, POSTECH, and Yonsei University rank among the world’s best, particularly in engineering, technology, and the natural sciences. KAIST alone ranks in the QS Top 50 globally for Engineering and Technology, giving scholarship recipients access to genuinely world-class research environments.

Lower Cost of Living Without Compromising Quality

Compared to many Western study destinations, South Korea offers a notably lower cost of living — particularly outside Seoul — while still delivering globally recognised degrees and cutting-edge facilities. This makes Korean scholarships stretch further for Bangladeshi students managing a limited budget.

Direct Pathways to Global Career Opportunities

South Korea is home to the headquarters of major multinational corporations across technology, electronics, and automotive industries. Scholarship recipients — particularly in STEM and business fields — gain exposure to internship and employment pathways with some of the world’s most recognisable companies.

Post-Study Work Opportunities

Korea offers a D-10 job-seeking visa that allows international graduates to remain in the country to search for employment after completing their studies, giving scholarship recipients a genuine runway to convert their education into a career in Korea.

Types of Scholarships Available in South Korea

1. Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) — The Flagship Government Award

Formerly known as the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP), the Global Korea Scholarship is South Korea’s flagship scholarship initiative and one of the most comprehensive fully funded programmes available to international students worldwide.

  • Provider: Government of South Korea, administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED)
  • Level: Undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD programmes
  • Coverage: Full tuition fees, round-trip airfare (economy class), a one-time settlement allowance, a monthly living allowance of approximately KRW 900,000 to 1,000,000, free one-year Korean language training, medical insurance, a research allowance, and a degree completion grant
  • Eligibility: Non-Korean citizenship (including parents); under 25 for undergraduate and under 40 for graduate applicants; a minimum academic score of 80% or top 20% of class in the most recent qualification; good physical and mental health
  • Application Tracks: Embassy Track (apply through the Korean Embassy, with up to three university choices) or University Track (apply directly to a single chosen university)
  • Application Window: Undergraduate applications typically open around September; graduate applications typically open in February and close in March
  • Scale: Around 2,000 graduate scholarships and 500-plus undergraduate scholarships are awarded annually across more than 80 participating Korean universities
  • Note: Participating universities are divided into Type A (top-ranked, mostly in Seoul, highly competitive) and Type B (located outside Seoul, with comparatively lower competition); Embassy Track applicants must select at least one Type B university

2. University-Specific Scholarships — Automatic Full Funding (STEM-Focused)

Five of Korea’s leading national science and technology institutes offer full tuition waivers and monthly stipends to every admitted international graduate student — automatically, with no separate scholarship application required.

  • KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology): Full tuition waiver plus a monthly living stipend, medical insurance, and research support for both undergraduate and graduate international students. All graduate instruction is in English. Admission requires TOEFL iBT 83 or IELTS 6.5 for international applicants. Ranks in the QS Top 50 globally for Engineering and Technology.
  • POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology): Full tuition waiver with one of the highest combined monthly stipends among Korean institutions — reportedly up to approximately KRW 1,850,000 for Master’s and KRW 2,200,000 for PhD students through combined teaching and research assistantship support.
  • UNIST, GIST, and DGIST: Follow the same model as KAIST and POSTECH — full tuition waiver and monthly stipend automatically bundled into the admission decision for all admitted international graduate students.
  • Important Note: Automatic funding does not mean automatic admission — research fit with a faculty advisor is typically the primary selection criterion at these institutions, alongside strong academic records and English proficiency.

3. University-Specific Scholarships — Application-Based (SKY Universities and Others)
  • Seoul National University (SNU) — SNU Global Scholarship / President Fellowship: Covers full or partial tuition and, for top candidates, a stipend and airfare. The President Fellowship offers up to KRW 2,000,000 per month for PhD students from developing countries, with around 50 graduate slots available annually. Particularly strong for students from developing countries, including Bangladesh.
  • Yonsei University — Underwood International College (UIC) Scholarships and Yonsei Global Scholarship (YGS): Full or partial tuition support for its all-English undergraduate curriculum, plus merit-based graduate scholarships. Some awards include living stipends for exceptional candidates.
  • Korea University — Scholarship A/B/C Tiers and Global KU Scholarship: Tiered scholarships covering 100%, 75%, or 50% of tuition fees based on GPA, alongside the Global Korea Scholarship pathway available through the university track.
  • Hanyang University — RISE Scholarship: A dedicated application-based scholarship for high-achieving international students.
  • Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and Ewha Womans University: Both offer merit-based scholarship tracks for international undergraduate and graduate applicants, assessed alongside the standard admission file.

4. Corporate and Foundation Scholarships
  • Samsung Global Scholarship: For graduate students in technology and business fields, covering tuition and stipend at SNU, KAIST, or POSTECH. Extremely competitive, with fewer than 20 awards made per year.
  • Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation Scholarship: Supports students from developing countries — including Bangladesh — studying engineering or business in Korea, covering full tuition and living costs.
  • LG Yonam Foundation: Funds students in Korean studies and engineering programmes at select partner universities.
  • Samsung Global Hope Scholarship Program: Provides financial support to students from low-income family backgrounds pursuing higher education, in place since 2012.

5. Research and Teaching Assistantships
  • BK21 FOUR (Brain Korea 21 Phase IV) Program: A national research-funding programme supporting outstanding graduate students across a wide range of fields at participating universities, including POSTECH.
  • Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA): Available at most Korean research universities, allowing international graduate students to work under faculty supervision in exchange for a stipend or tuition waiver — common in STEM disciplines.

How to Apply for Scholarships in South Korea

Step 1: Choose Your Application Track for GKS

For the Global Korea Scholarship, decide between the Embassy Track (apply through the Korean Embassy in Bangladesh, with up to three university preferences) or the University Track (apply directly to a single chosen university). You cannot apply through both tracks simultaneously, so this decision should be made early based on your target institutions and strategy.

Step 2: Research and Shortlist Universities

For STEM fields, prioritise KAIST, POSTECH, UNIST, GIST, and DGIST — these offer automatic full funding with admission and are particularly strong choices if guaranteed scholarship coverage is a priority. For humanities, social sciences, or policy studies, SNU, Yonsei’s Graduate School of International Studies, and Korea University’s GSIS programmes offer the strongest funded pathways, though the process is generally less automatic.

Step 3: Contact a Professor Before Applying (For Research Degrees)

If you are applying for a Master’s or PhD at a research-focused institution such as KAIST or POSTECH, it is strongly advisable to contact a professor in your target research lab before submitting your application. Securing interest from a potential supervisor significantly increases your chances of both admission and funding.

Step 4: Prepare Your Documents
  • Highest academic degree certificate and full transcripts (apostilled where required)
  • Letters of recommendation from professors or employers
  • Personal Statement or Statement of Purpose, with a detailed and specific Study Plan (particularly critical for GKS — reviewers spend more time on this than any other document)
  • English proficiency proof — TOEFL or IELTS (Korean language proficiency through TOPIK is an advantage but not always mandatory at application stage)
  • Valid passport copy and proof of citizenship for both applicant and parents (non-Korean citizenship is mandatory for GKS)
  • Medical certificate confirming fitness to study

Step 5: Write a Specific, Research-Based Study Plan

For GKS applications, a generic study plan significantly weakens your chances. Reviewers favour applicants who demonstrate detailed, specific knowledge of their intended field and a clear connection between their academic background, the Korean programme they are applying to, and their future career goals.

Step 6: Submit Through the Correct Channel and Track Deadlines Closely

Korean admissions are notably strict about deadlines and document formatting — late submissions by even a few minutes are typically rejected outright, and apostilled documents are often required rather than simple notarisation. Rico International helps Bangladeshi students track every deadline and ensure full document compliance before submission.

Tips to Strengthen Your South Korean Scholarship Application

  • Start Your Preparation Early
Begin at least 12 months in advance to prepare important documents, meet deadlines, and complete requirements such as certificate verification and other academic paperwork.

  • Explore STEM-Focused Universities
If full scholarship coverage is your priority, consider leading science and technology institutes such as KAIST, POSTECH, UNIST, GIST, and DGIST, where selected programs offer strong funding opportunities.

  • Connect with Potential Supervisors for Research Programs
For Master’s or PhD applications, contacting relevant faculty members before applying can strengthen your research profile and improve your chances.

  • Prepare a Strong Study Plan or Statement of Purpose
Your study plan is one of the most important parts of your application. Clearly explain your academic goals, research interests, and why you are a suitable candidate.

  • Follow Application Guidelines Carefully
Korean universities are highly detail-oriented. Review requirements multiple times to ensure your documents, formats, and deadlines are correctly followed.

  • Plan Your Financial Support Beyond Graduation
If you plan to seek employment in Korea after graduation, prepare separately for living expenses during the job-search period, as scholarships may not cover this stage.

  • Apply for Multiple Scholarship Opportunities
Explore both GKS and university-specific scholarships where eligible to increase your chances of receiving financial support.
